Early 70's Exercise Machine?

I recall back in the early 70's there was an exercise device that I can no longer find. Take a bicycle pump, remove the stem, and reverse the valves. Put a soft rope where the stem used to be. Put another rope on the bottom of the pump. Firm up the top and bottom with pulleys. Strength is built up by the air resistance of pulling the rope through the pump. There is no recoil, so the valves have to be returned to the starting position after every repetition by pulling the rope on the bottom of the pump. Has anyone else seen such a device, and what can you tell me about it?
