Bought granite hearth. Fitter says needs cut into 3 pieces & joined to stop it splitting. Is this normal?

No don't let them cut it into three. I have never seen any sort of hearth split other than concrete ones. I have posted a web addy give them a call I am sure they will be able to advise you fully.
